The Anthropology of Quilts:
21st century quilt-related knowledge for
intelligent creators who want more
You've found Kristin Barrus, Academic Quiltmaker, an ethnographic researcHER exploring the anthropology of 21st century quilts and women's work. And I make quilts.
I'm a Gen X mom who draws inspiration from pop culture and the outdoors. Join our quilt wave of rad makers to learn more about craftswomanship, fandom, and self-efficacy in today's Quilt World.
I use ethnographic practice to enrich knowledge and experiences of domestic craft, women’s work, and art, while encouraging passionate makers to cultivate common ground through my fresh research and ethical thought.
My professional purpose is to expand the borders of quilt knowledge by creating and then sharing original, trustworthy, ethnographic research of the 21st century Quilt World, positioned within an unbroken conversation across the textile continuum, to enrich the practice and experience of today’s quiltmakers at all levels.
My work, both in writing and in fabric, can be found in journals, magazines, and lectures, which are included here. Topics include fandom in the Quilt World, women entrepreneurs, the Modern Quilt Movement, women making society, QuiltCon as pilgrimage, and the rotary cutter.
